Creative Direction & Brand Identity: Whipper Snapper
Whippersnapper: a young and inexperienced person considered to be presumptuous or overconfident.
Whippersnapper got its roots in 2012 as a delicious, natural drink for kids. It has continued to be a signature beverage of choice amongst troublemakers, scoundrels, and youngsters alike. Ironically, Whippersnapper did grow up. As the youngsters grew, we’ve realized that our drinks aren’t just for the young, but the young at heart. Over the years, we’ve become rightfully confident in our drinks and our mission: we pledge to combine flavor with the perfect blend of fun, irreverence, and mischief to keep us all rebellious, playful, and young.
THE STORY: In 2012, I was a junior in high school. I was taking a graphic design & communications course at a local vocational school, and was given the assignment of coming up with a packaging design project. The concept was open to interpretation, and so I wanted to tackle a mock project - a series of fun soda drinks for kids. I coined the name Whippersnapper, cleaned out some old glass bottles, and created sticker labels for the 4-pack of bottles. I don’t have the packaging die-cut, but I do have the old bottles on display in my office. Before/after photos included below.
THE PROJECT: In 2024, I was approached by Sharyn Murray at Locomotion Multimedia to collaborate on a project to promote and expand our portfolios. I had the idea of rebranding my high school project - surely I’ve grown my talents since then, perhaps it was time for the project to grow and evolve, too. We set out on looking for inspiration, laid out a logo, and built out animations, advertisements, and packaging to fit the revamped concept. The concept for Whippersnapper evolved from a drink that was “for the young” to a mature, fun, and playful set of beverages targeting the “young at heart.” Whippersnapper is a delicious drink that appeals to the rebels; the irreverent, the playful, those that refuse to grow up, and the ones that don’t conform.
THE RESULT: A logo design; a set of logo animations with secondary color palettes based on the flavor; a set of 5 can packaging designs (one for every flavor); digital advertising, and a ~ :30s video ad.
MY ROLES: Art direction, brand & visual identity, logo design, packaging design, writing copy, ad design, video storyboarding, animation direction.
